Walleye





Walleye are the largest of the perch family and can grow over 30 inches in length. Walleyes have excellent vision at lower levels of light, because of this they tend to feed more at dawn and dusk as well as during overcast or choppy days when the light penetration is disrupted. For their habitat, walleye seek areas where the bottom is gravelly as well as rocky points, but don’t overlook weed lines in the early spring!



Northern Pike





Northern Pike can grow in excess of 45 inches in length and can weigh up to 20 pounds. Pike are commonly found in slow streams and shallow weedy areas in lakes, as well as in some of the colder, rocky deeper breaks. The Northern Pike is an extremely aggressive ambush predator, meaning the will hit hard and fast! Lake St. Joseph produces many trophy sized Northern Pike ranging anywhere between 40 and 50 inches in length!



History





Lake St. Joseph, located in NW Ontario, carries a rich heritage, originally serving as a vital hunting and fishing site for Indigenous peoples. It later became a key fur trading route in the 17th and 18th centuries and a hub for the timber industry in later years. Today, it's renowned for its pristine wilderness and world-class fishing, especially for Walleye and Northern Pike. Lake St. Joseph symbolizes a successful balance between natural preservation and recreational use, making it a prime destination for anglers and nature lovers alike.



Fishing





Lake St. Joseph is a large fresh water lake with a wilderness designation which requires a special permit to fish. Access to the lake is restricted because of the designation. Non-residents who wish to fish the lake will have to stay at one of the fishing camps which operate on the lake. The primary species that will be found on the lake include: walleye, northern pike, and yellow perch.





Fish Handling recommendations



We are committed to the health and sustainability of Lake St. Joseph's ecosystem. To support this, we ask our guests to follow these fish handling guidelines:

-Wet Your Hands: Before handling a fish, always wet your hands. This helps protect the fish's slime coat, crucial for its health and protection against diseases.

- Support the Fish: When holding a fish, support its body to avoid damaging its internal organs.

- Keep the Fish in Water: For catch and release, minimize the time the fish spends out of the water to reduce stress and improve its chances of survival.

- Use Tools: Keep pliers or a hook removal tool ready to quickly and safely remove the hook.

- Gentle Release: Carefully return the fish to the water, supporting it until it swims away on its own. By following these practices, you contribute to preserving the vibrant aquatic life in Lake St. Joseph for future anglers. Thank you for joining us in these conservation efforts.

All walleye over 18” must be released
