In days of fur trading Lake St. Joseph was used as part of a canoe route from James Bay to Lake Winnipeg. The Hudson Bay Company established the Osanburgh House on the lake in 1786 and operated it until 1939.
Lake St. Joseph is a large fresh water lake with a wilderness designation which requires a special permit to fish. Access to the lake is restricted because of the designation. Non-residents who wish to fish the lake will have to stay at one of the fishing camps which operate on the lake. The primary species that will be found on the lake include: Walleye, Northern Pike and Yellow Perch.
